L’OCCITANE en Provence, renowned for its use of natural ingredients, and CARBIOS, a pioneer in biological technologies for plastic recycling, have unveiled a transparent PET bottle crafted entirely from enzymatic recycling. This innovation is showcased in a shower oil bottle from L’OCCITANE's Amande range. Teaming up with converter Pinard Beauty Pack, this initiative reflects a joint commitment to foster an efficient European recycling sector, aligning with the transition to a circular economy for plastics and meeting sustainability goals for packaging.
The PET bottle, created through CARBIOS' enzymatic depolymerization process, is a result of a European value chain committed to responsible consumption of sustainable materials. PET waste, including colored bottles and multilayer trays, which are not recycled by conventional technologies, were used in the production process.
CARBIOS transformed PET waste into original monomers (PTA and MEG) using biorecycling technology. These monomers were then repolymerized into fully recycled PET resins within Europe. Pinard Beauty Pack blow-molded these resins into bottles according to L’OCCITANE’s specifications in Oyonnax, France, and filled them with shower oil at its Manosque plant.
This approach optimizes environmental benefits and life cycle analysis by reducing transport distances and integrating local collection and production processes. Similar chains will need to be established worldwide to meet the needs of international brands.
The PET bottle will be showcased at CARBIOS’ Stand D02 during “Edition Spéciale” by LuxePack, a trade show dedicated to sustainable premium packaging, scheduled on 4-5 June 2024 at the Carreau du Temple in Paris.
